Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of it — sinking into a routine and never even realizing we’re stuck. Comfort zones can be helpful boundaries to set for yourself, but more often than not they become barriers to our success.
Sometimes we forget that a career path is not a solitary street; it’s a network of crossroads. And while this may be overwhelming, remember that there are no dead ends. Sometimes, we just need to pick up the shovel and start paving a brand-new path.
There are no clear rules when it comes to accelerating your career growth, but there are some best practices you can implement to get you on your way. When it comes to career growth, I love to refer to this proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is NOW.” Working from home, or staying at home during this pandemic, could be the best time to start something now. Here are some baby steps to get you going:
1. Find Your Purpose
We all have goals – some of us have a healthy mix of short and long-term plans that fuel our career and, in turn, our sense of purpose. The good news is you don’t have to limit yourself. You can have many different purposes… as long as you make sure they are guiding you forward.
Don’t know what your purpose is? Then this exercise is especially important for you. If you don’t have goals set for your career, you won’t be able to take the steps to drive it forward.
2. Shake Things Up
Routines are a necessary evil. Having a schedule feels dependable, but be careful; they can easily become restrictive and monotonous.
Embracing change is important, and it can be especially helpful when it comes to rejuvenating your spark. Whether it be for your career health, emotional energy, or creative sanity, breaking from your schedule can do wonders. Keep yourself on your toes, incorporate small and gradual habits into the daily routine.
It’s easy to fall into a routine and feel like you don’t ever need to change it. So, my advice to you is to tweak even the strictest of to-do lists. Which brings me to my last point…
3. Learn Something New Every Day
Whether it’s related to your field of work or not, exposing yourself to new content is a great way to keep your mind fresh. There are endless sources of information at your fingertips. No matter the subject, learning will help you grow as a professional and as a person. Pick up a good book, subscribe to a new blog, or watch that DIY YouTube series. Whatever your fix, you can find it out there in the world and let it inspire you.
Forcing change is a great way to bring yourself out of the rut, but you might need a bigger push. If you’re feeling trapped by your day-to-day, you are not alone. Working with a career coach can help you get the outcomes you deserve to jumpstart your career.
