Career Reinvention: Managing the Change

Change is inevitable. At one point or another, we all go through change in our lives. Even when you decide to make a positive change – like a change in career – the adjustment period can be quite difficult. There are plenty of concrete steps to take to reinvent your career.  However, you also need to prepare emotionally; a career reinvention requires transition, because “it isn’t the changes that will do you in; it’s the transition.” (Bridges).

Planning and preparation are key to a career transition; here are some tips to get started:

Look Inward at Yourself

Before you start planning your transition, I recommend doing a little soul searching. Consider your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your skills, wants, and needs. This is the first step to help you face your fears head on, reinforce your sense of hope, and make your overall transition a breeze.

Adjust to Your New Normal

When it comes to reinventing your career, there will be quite an adjustment period. To be prepared to your new normal, it’s important to be aware that transition begins with an ending – letting go of the old career in this case – and finishes with a beginning – your new career. This is your time to change your career path to meet your needs. Start by focusing on what you want and develop a plan to get you there.

Find a Support System

When it comes to dealing with a big change in your life, it’s easy to feel isolated and alone. In times like these, it’s crucial to lean on the people around you. Oftentimes, transitions will impact your family. Therefore, it is important to lean on friends, professionals, and mentors to ease the transition.

Take Control and Move Forward

Individuals cope with change in different ways, which can generally be grouped into two categories: escape coping and control coping. Escape coping leans heavily on avoidance and rather than dealing with the challenges of the transition, one might do other things to distract themselves from the emotions they are feeling.

Control coping, in contrast, is the healthier way to go about this transition period.  Instead of running away from change, one will do whatever they can to actively be a part of it. It’s important to let go of how things were “supposed to be” and instead focus on how they are and embrace change.
