Being a great leader starts with you. In fact, self-leadership is the foundation of every great leader, though the process is challenging and continuous. This is a full-time job, and it doesn’t only pertain to leading others. The most successful leaders make it because they know how to lead themselves.
So, how can you begin to walk the path of a leader?
Make it a Mindset
The mindset of a leader is a growth mindset. If you’ve had the opportunity to work alongside a successful person, you know that their presence can often lift an entire team of people. It isn’t enough to simply pose as a boss; you have to truly act like one. The leadership mindset will let you transcend beyond the basic motions of your day-to-day, so you can inspire yourself and others.
Prioritize Personal Growth
The key to being a good leader is self-awareness. By recognizing your strengths and weaknesses, you can set goals for yourself not just at the professional level, but in all areas of your life. Complacency is the downfall of many managers, which is why it’s important to always be looking ahead. Set goals –including continuous education – make a timeline, and most importantly, reward yourself!
Lead in All Aspects of Your Life
Being a leader is more than simply filling a position; it becomes a key part of who you are. The best leaders apply the practice to every aspect of their lives—not just within the workplace. That means being a leader in your home, in your relationships, and even within yourself. Figure out what makes your world run smoothly and be the master of that process. By doing this, you can consistently become a better leader and in turn, live a more fulfilling life.
Don’t Base Your Work on “Getting Credit”
From the time we are young kids all the way through adulthood, incentives are a huge part of driving us to do things. While this can be a great source of motivation, as a leader, you’ll be doing a lot of things behind the scenes without any credit given. Be okay with putting your energy forward without any immediate praise or reward. Most importantly, recognize your team’s effort.
Build and Use Your Support System
As a leader, it’s easy to feel alone. Remember to utilize and cultivate your network and seek out mentors; surround yourself with people that are smarter than you in diverse fields… and never be afraid to ask for help.
